Capacitors (substituted parts)
Nice kit.  Good soldermask make it easy to construct. Lots of bang for the buck.

The caps in the kit did not match the values listed in the instructions for building it. Â

Mine came with with ribbon cable and 1 connector.  How about adding additional connectors as an option.  Maybe both the 10 pin and single row 5 and 6 pin types.

RE: Capacitors
Many of the caps have close values that will not affect the kits operation. None of the capacitors are critical and all are for filtering power (except the two small 22pf to 32pf caps near the crystal)
Which values do you have that are in question?

I do not have any questions, but the substutions could confuse a less experianced kit builder. Maybe update the online instructions to match what ships with the kit.

RE: Capacitors
I wanted to keep the price of the kit low so some parts got susbstituted with what I have on hand. Of course I consulted with Blueroomelectronics first.

Last night I updated listing to include partslist with substituted values and references to schematic. Hopefully that can prevent the confusion.

Update Dec. 22. 2006

I received an email from the customer and think this may be beneficial for others if those questions are answered on this board:

Quote:1. C1 is supposed to be .33uf  and the only one remaining is a .1uf disc. Is that ok to use the .1 as a substitute for the .33uf cap?
That is correct.

Quote:2. C6, C7, C8, C11, and C12 are supposed to be 10uf parts for the charge pump caps around the MAX232 part. You supplied 2.2uf parts. Are they ok to use in place of the 10uf parts?
MAX232 datasheet calls for >1uF and ST232 datasheet even for >0.1uF. The supplied 2.2uF for charge pumps are plenty. We only had 50V parts this time.

Quote:3. C2 and C9 are supposed to be 47uf caps. You supply one 47uf and one 22uf caps. Which one goes where?
C9 must be higher voltage part, the 22uF should be plenty. I checked the output with this capacitor on the oscilloscope and there was minimal ripple with 10mA load.

Quote:4. C10 and C13 are supposed to be 33pf parts for the oscillator. Are the supplied 22pf parts for this purpose?
We did not have 33pF. Microchip datasheet specifies 10-22pF in HS mode. The value of capacitors also depend on the type of the crystal. The crystal we supplied oscillates even without the capacitors.

All of the substituted parts are non-critical value for given functionality.

Merry Christmas to all
